Monsoon and the Indian economy

Geography glossary

Topic: Climate of India and the Monsoon · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 4 "Climate"

Meaning

The monsoon is the axis of India's farm cycle, meaning everything in farming turns around it. NCERT says 64% of people depend on farming. The current figure is about 46% of the workforce (PLFS 2023-24). The timing and spread of the rain decide kharif output (crops sown with the monsoon), rural incomes, reservoir levels and food prices. A sudden burst of heavy rain can wash away soil. Winter rain helps rabi crops (crops sown in winter).

Example

In northwest India, light winter rain from western disturbances (rain-bearing low-pressure systems from the Mediterranean) helps the rabi wheat crop of Punjab and Haryana. Across the country, a good June-September monsoon fills reservoirs and supports kharif crops such as rice.

Don't confuse with

  • Monsoon failure: one bad season and the harm it causes. The monsoon's link with the economy is the permanent dependence of farming, incomes and prices on the rain, in good years and bad.
