Mount Kailash
Also called: Kailash · Topic: India and her Neighbours · NCERT: Class 6, Ch 3 "Landforms and Life"
Meaning
Mount Kailash is a peak about 6,638 m high in Tibet, which is part of China. Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of the Bon religion all treat it as sacred. Lake Mansarovar lies close to it. The Indus, Satluj and Brahmaputra all rise near Kailash, which means China is upstream of India on all three rivers. Indian pilgrims go there on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which resumed in 2025.
Example
Indian pilgrims reach Kailash through two passes: Lipulekh in Pithoragarh district (Uttarakhand) and Nathu La in Sikkim. Both routes cross the India-China border.
Don't confuse with
- Kailash temple (Ellora): this is a rock-cut temple in Maharashtra named after the mountain. It is not a peak.
