Mundra port
Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Mundra is India's largest commercial port by cargo handled. It lies on the Gulf of Kutch in Gujarat and is run by the private Adani group. It is a non-major port, which means it is overseen by the state government, not the central government. The Gulf of Kutch has deep water and is close to the Gulf countries and to the ports of the western world. Mundra is linked to north India by rail and road. Its growth shows how Gujarat's non-major ports now handle a large share of India's cargo (verify current).
Example
Containers, coal and crude oil for factories in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Delhi are unloaded at Mundra, in Kachchh district, Gujarat. They are then moved inland by rail.
Don't confuse with
- Kandla (Deendayal) port: a government-run major port on the same Gulf of Kutch. Mundra is a private, non-major port.
