Myanmar earthquake (2025)
Also called: Mandalay earthquake, Sagaing earthquake · Topic: Interior of the Earth: Earthquakes, Volcanoes and the Layered Earth · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Myanmar earthquake struck on 28 March 2025, with a magnitude of Mw 7.7. It hit near Mandalay in central Myanmar. It happened on the Sagaing Fault, which is a strike-slip fault: the blocks on each side slide past each other sideways instead of one riding over the other. The fault runs north-south through Myanmar. India sent relief under Operation Brahma. That makes the quake a current-affairs topic on India's disaster diplomacy.
Example
The Sagaing Fault runs past Mandalay and Sagaing in central Myanmar. The worst shaking was close to these cities.
Don't confuse with
- Thrust earthquake (Gorkha 2015, Tohoku 2011): here one block is pushed up over another. On the Sagaing Fault, the blocks moved sideways.
- Operation Dost: India's relief mission after the Turkey-Syria quake of 2023. Operation Brahma was the mission for Myanmar.
