NALCO
Also called: National Aluminium Company · Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 6 "Manufacturing Industries"
Meaning
NALCO, the National Aluminium Company, is a public sector aluminium company set up in 1981. Its whole production chain is in Odisha, from mining the bauxite to making aluminium metal. Having every stage in one state cuts the cost of moving bulky bauxite over long distances.
Example
NALCO's chain runs in three steps, all in Odisha:
- Bauxite is mined at Panchpatmali.
- It is refined into alumina at Damanjodi in Koraput district.
- The alumina is smelted into aluminium at Angul.
Don't confuse with
- BALCO: its plant is at Korba in Chhattisgarh, not in Odisha.
- Vedanta: this is a private company, with aluminium plants at Jharsuguda and Lanjigarh in Odisha. NALCO is in the public sector.
