National Mission for Clean Ganga

Geography glossary

Also called: NMCG · Topic: Geographical Issues: Pollution, Urban Waste, Slums and Land Degradation · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 9 "Geographical Perspective on Selected Issues and Problems"

Meaning

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is the body that carries out India's work to clean the Ganga. It is a registered society set up in 2011. It acts as the working arm of the National Ganga Council (2016), which sets the overall direction. NMCG runs the Namami Gange Programme. This includes sewage treatment in towns, checking industrial waste, river-front development, planting trees along the banks and cleaning the river surface.

Example

Under Namami Gange, NMCG supports Ganga Grams. These are villages along the river in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal that are made cleaner so their waste does not reach the river.

Don't confuse with

  • National Ganga Council: this is the top council that guides and decides policy. NMCG is the arm that carries the work out.
  • Ganga Action Plan: this was the first cleaning programme, from 1985. NMCG is a later body (2011), not a plan.
