Navi Mumbai International Airport
Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Navi Mumbai International Airport is a greenfield airport, which means it was built on new land and not by expanding an old airport. It is at Ulwe, near Panvel, in the Mumbai region. The Adani group built it together with CIDCO, a Maharashtra government agency. It was inaugurated in October 2025. Its main job is to take some of the load off Mumbai's main airport, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, which is very crowded.
Example
A traveller from Panvel or the Navi Mumbai area can now fly from Ulwe. They no longer have to cross the crowded city to reach the older airport. Mumbai becomes a city with two airports, which spreads out the flights.
Don't confuse with
- Noida International Airport (Jewar): this is the other big greenfield airport. It serves the Delhi region in Uttar Pradesh, not Mumbai.
