New political map of India 2019
Topic: Maps and Map Scale · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Survey of India issued this map on 2 November 2019, after Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised. It shows two new Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. It places Gilgit-Baltistan and Aksai Chin inside the Union Territory of Ladakh. The map shows India's official view of its borders, and India's external boundary is shown with the Survey of India's authority.
Example
Aksai Chin lies in the far north-east of Ladakh. China holds it, but India claims it. On the 2019 map it is shown as part of the Union Territory of Ladakh, along with Leh and Kargil.
Don't confuse with
- Nepal's new map of May 2020: this was a rival map. It showed Kalapani, Lipulekh and Limpiyadhura as part of Nepal, and India protested. It was not issued by India.
