One-horned rhinoceros
Also called: Greater one-horned rhinoceros, Indian rhinoceros · Topic: Biodiversity and its Conservation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Forest and Wildlife Resources"
Meaning
The one-horned rhinoceros is a large grazing animal of tall, wet grasslands in the Brahmaputra valley and the Terai at the foot of the Himalaya. It has a single horn and thick, folded skin. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable. Poachers kill it for its horn, so it needs strong protection.
Example
Kaziranga National Park, on the Brahmaputra floodplain in Assam, holds about two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinos. Smaller groups live in Pobitora, Orang and Manas (Assam), Jaldapara (West Bengal) and Dudhwa (Uttar Pradesh).
Don't confuse with
- African rhinos: the African species have two horns. The Indian rhino has one horn.
