Meaning

The Padma river is the main branch of the Ganga in Bangladesh. Near Farakka, the Ganga splits into two distributaries, which are channels that branch away from a river. One branch, the Bhagirathi–Hugli, flows south through West Bengal. The other, the Padma, flows into Bangladesh. There the Padma receives the Jamuna (the Brahmaputra's name in Bangladesh). The combined river then reaches the Bay of Bengal as the Meghna.

Example

In Bangladesh, the Padma and the Jamuna join to form part of the Ganga–Brahmaputra delta. It is one of the world's largest deltas.

Don't confuse with

  • Bhagirathi–Hugli: the Ganga's other branch. It stays in India, passes Kolkata and reaches the sea at Sagar Island.
  • Meghna: the name of the joined river near the sea, after the Padma has received the Jamuna.
