Panama Canal water crisis
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Panama Canal is a lock canal, so every ship that passes through uses a large amount of fresh water. This water comes from Gatun Lake. In 2023-24, a severe drought linked to El Niño lowered the lake. So the canal authority cut the number of ships allowed through each day. It also cut the draught, which is how deep a ship may sit in the water, so ships had to carry less cargo. The crisis showed how climate stress can disrupt world trade.
Example
Gatun Lake lies in the middle of the Isthmus of Panama, between Colon (Atlantic side) and Panama City (Pacific side). During the drought, many ships waited for days or chose longer routes.
Don't confuse with
- Low water on the Rhine: a similar climate problem on a river in Europe. In 2018 and 2022 it hurt German industry.
