Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana
Also called: PKVY · Topic: Land Use, Farming Systems and Cropping Seasons in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Land Resources and Agriculture"
Meaning
The Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) was launched in 2015 to promote organic farming in India. "Paramparagat" means traditional. Farmers are grouped into clusters, so they can switch to organic farming together and share costs. The scheme helps with organic inputs and with certification through PGS-India (Participatory Guarantee System). Under PGS, groups of farmers check and vouch for each other's organic practices. The scheme also helps farmers market their organic produce.
Example
A group of neighbouring villages forms a PKVY cluster. Its farmers stop using chemical fertilisers and switch to compost and neem, get their produce certified under PGS-India, and sell it as organic.
Don't confuse with
- National Mission on Natural Farming (2024): promotes chemical-free farming that relies only on inputs made on the farm. PKVY promotes certified organic farming.
