Geography glossary

Topic: Natural Resources: Classification, Planning and Sustainable Use · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 1 "Resources and Development"

Meaning

A potential resource has been found in a region but is not yet being used. It may be left unused because of cost, lack of infrastructure or limited technology. It is one class in NCERT's classification by status of development. Potential resources show where future development could come from.

Example

Rajasthan and Gujarat, in western India, have huge potential for wind and solar energy. Only part of it is in use so far.

Don't confuse with

  • Stock: here we do not even have the technology to use the resource, such as getting energy from the hydrogen in water.
  • Developed resource: this has already been surveyed and measured, and it is in use.
