Productivity
Topic: Human Development: Concept, Approaches and Measurement · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Human Development"
Meaning
Productivity is one of the four pillars of human development. Here it means human labour productivity, which is how much useful work people can do. It keeps rising as people become healthier and better educated. So the state must keep investing in people's knowledge and health. The pillar rests on the idea that "people are the real wealth of nations". A healthy, skilled worker produces more, earns more and has more choices.
Example
Skilling programmes in India train young people for jobs, so that a large working-age population turns into more productive workers. Economists call this gain the demographic dividend.
Don't confuse with
- Economic growth: growth measures total output. The productivity pillar is about building people's own capacity through health and knowledge.
