Punjab floods 2025
Topic: Natural Hazards and Disaster Management in India · NCERT: Class 9, Ch 3 "Atmosphere and Climate"
Meaning
In the 2025 monsoon, Punjab suffered severe floods. Western disturbances (rain-bearing winds that come from the west) made the monsoon rain even heavier. This swelled the Satluj, Beas, Ravi and Ghaggar rivers. Human failures made the damage worse:
- Weak dhusi bandh (old earthen embankments) broke.
- Houses had been built close to the rivers.
- Silt had filled the rivers and dams, so they held less water.
- Warnings came late.
All 23 districts were declared disaster-hit (verify current). The case shows how natural rain and human mistakes together turn a hazard into a disaster.
Example
The floods hit the plains along the Satluj, Beas and Ravi in Punjab, in north-west India. This region is usually known for canal irrigation, not for big floods.
Don't confuse with
- Flash flood: sudden and local, lasting a few hours. The Punjab floods were long river floods caused by days of heavy rain and broken embankments.
