Ropeways and cableways
Also called: Ropeway, Cable car · Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
Ropeways and cableways carry people or goods in cars or buckets hung from strong cables stretched between towers. They are used on steep mountain slopes and in mines, where building roads is not practical. A ropeway can go straight up a slope that a road would need many bends to climb. This saves time and land in difficult terrain.
Example
Austria uses cableways widely on its Alpine slopes. In India, the Parvatmala programme (2022) plans ropeways in hilly areas, such as one to Kedarnath in Uttarakhand.
