SDG India Index
Topic: Regional Planning and Sustainable Development in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The SDG India Index is a scorecard made by NITI Aayog since 2018. It ranks states and Union Territories on how far they have moved towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are 17 global goals, with 169 targets, adopted by the UN in 2015. The index turns them into scores, so states can compare themselves and compete to improve. This is part of cooperative federalism, where the Centre and the states work together.
Example
In the 2023-24 index, Kerala and Uttarakhand were at the top and Bihar was at the bottom. India's overall score was 71 (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- Aspirational Districts Programme's Champions of Change dashboard: it ranks 112 backward districts on 49 indicators. The SDG India Index ranks whole states and Union Territories.
