Second stage of demographic transition

Geography glossary

Topic: World Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Migration · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth"

Meaning

In the second stage of demographic transition, deaths fall because of better sanitation and health care. Births stay high at first and decline only slowly. The wide gap between high births and low deaths makes population grow very fast. This is the stage of "population explosion", and growth is highest here.

Example

India from 1951 to 1981 is the classic case. Health care and disease control cut deaths sharply, but families stayed large. The population grew rapidly, which is often called India's population explosion.

Don't confuse with

  • First stage of demographic transition: Both births and deaths are high in stage one, so growth is slow. In stage two, only deaths drop, so growth is fast.
