Shipbuilding clusters

Geography glossary

Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Shipbuilding clusters are coastal places with shipyards. Shipyards are big works where ships and warships are built and repaired. They need deep water, port access, steel and skilled engineers. India's share of world shipbuilding is very small. A 2025 maritime package plans new shipbuilding clusters to grow the industry (verify current).

Example

Cochin Shipyard in Kochi (Kerala) built INS Vikrant, India's own aircraft carrier, which was commissioned in 2022. Other major yards are Mazagon Dock (Mumbai), Garden Reach (Kolkata), Hindustan Shipyard (Visakhapatnam) and Goa Shipyard.

Don't confuse with

  • Ports: a port is where ships load and unload goods. A shipyard is where ships are built. Some cities, such as Kochi and Visakhapatnam, have both.
