Sketch map
Also called: Sketch · Topic: Maps and Map Scale · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Introduction to Maps"; Class 11, Ch 2 "Map Scale"
Meaning
A sketch map is a rough drawing made freehand, from memory or by looking at a place. It does not keep a true scale, so distances on it cannot be measured. It also does not keep true orientation, so its directions may be wrong. NCERT says a network of lines and polygons (closed shapes) without a scale is a sketch, not a map. Sketches are still useful for quick ideas, like showing someone the way.
Example
NCERT shows a freehand sketch of the area around Delhi next to a proper map of Delhi. On the sketch, the places are in roughly the right order. On the map, the places are at their true distances and directions.
Don't confuse with
- Map: a map is drawn to scale and has a fixed direction (north). So you can measure real distance and direction on it. A sketch has neither.
