Solid Waste Management Rules 2026
Topic: Geographical Issues: Pollution, Urban Waste, Slums and Land Degradation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 are India's new rules for handling city garbage. They came into force on 1 April 2026 and replaced the 2016 Rules. Waste must be sorted at the source into four streams:
- wet waste
- dry waste
- sanitary waste
- special care waste
Only residual waste, the leftover part that cannot be recycled or composted, may go to landfill. Polluters who break the rules must pay environmental compensation (verify current).
Example
Under these rules, a household in a city like Indore, Madhya Pradesh must keep kitchen scraps (wet waste) separate from plastic and paper (dry waste). It must also keep used diapers (sanitary waste) apart from both.
Don't confuse with
- Solid Waste Management Rules 2016: the older rules that the 2026 Rules replaced. The four-stream sorting and the limit of landfill to residual waste are features of the 2026 Rules.
