Somali Current

Geography glossary

Topic: Movements of Ocean Water: Waves, Tides and Currents · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 13 "Movements of Ocean Water"

Meaning

The Somali Current flows along the coast of Somalia in East Africa. It changes direction with the monsoon. In summer it flows north and becomes one of the fastest currents in the world. In winter it flows south. In summer, strong winds push surface water away from the coast. Cold water full of nutrients then rises from below, which is called upwelling. This cools the Arabian Sea and supports rich fisheries.

Example

In the summer monsoon, strong upwelling off Somalia and Oman brings cold water to the surface of the western Arabian Sea. This cools the sea and feeds large fish stocks.

Don't confuse with

  • Agulhas Current: a warm current that flows south along South Africa's east coast all year. The Somali Current reverses with the seasons.
