Spatial information technology
Topic: Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 4 "Spatial Information Technology"
Meaning
Spatial information technology is the use of technology to collect, store, find, display, change, manage and analyse information tied to locations on the earth. It brings several tools together. Remote sensing gathers images from above. GPS gives exact positions. GIS stores and analyses the data. Digital cartography draws the maps, and a DBMS manages the tables. Together they answer "what is where, and why?" for planning and decisions.
Example
Under the SVAMITVA scheme (2020), drones photograph villages and survey networks fix positions. GIS then maps each plot, and owners receive property cards. This is spatial information technology at work.
Don't confuse with
- GIS: only one part of spatial information technology. GIS analyses spatial data, while the wider field also includes collecting it (remote sensing, GPS).
