Spatial synthesis
Topic: Geography as a Discipline: Nature, Branches and Approaches · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 1 "Geography as a Discipline"
Meaning
Spatial synthesis means combining facts from many sciences to understand a place as a whole. "Synthesis" means putting parts together. Geography does this across space. History does the same thing across time, which is called temporal synthesis. The two subjects support each other, because every place changes over time and every event happens somewhere.
Example
To understand Kerala, on India's south-west coast, a geographer combines its heavy monsoon rain, coastal lowlands, backwaters, rice and coconut farming, fishing, dense settlements and trade links with the sea. Joined together, these facts explain Kerala as one place.
Don't confuse with
- Temporal synthesis: this combines facts over time, which is the job of history. "Geography attempts temporal synthesis" is a common false statement.
