State of World Population report
Also called: SWOP · Topic: World Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Migration · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The State of World Population report (SWOP) is the main yearly report of UNFPA, the UN Population Fund. Each edition picks one theme about people, families and choice. Common themes are fertility, women's health and rights. It matters because its themes often shape debates on population policy, especially on low fertility and pronatalism (government efforts to raise births).
Example
The 2025 edition was called "The Real Fertility Crisis". It argued that the bigger problem is not too many or too few babies. The real problem is that many people cannot have the number of children they want (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- World Population Prospects: This is a different report. It comes from UN DESA, usually every two years, and gives the official population numbers and projections. SWOP comes from UNFPA every year and is built around a theme.
