Tabulation

Geography glossary

Also called: Statistical table · Topic: Geographical Data: Sources, Compilation and Processing · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Data - Its Source and Compilation"; Class 12, Ch 4 "Spatial Information Technology"

Meaning

Tabulation means arranging data in the rows and columns of a statistical table. A good table has a title, headings for rows and columns, footnotes and the source. Tabulation makes data simpler to read, easier to compare and quick to look up, and it saves space. Footnotes explain any limits of the figures.

Example

A Census 2011 table lists the population of each Indian state in rows, with columns for persons, males and females. A footnote says that the Jammu and Kashmir figure does not include Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), so readers understand the limit of that number.

Don't confuse with

  • Grouping of data: grouping sorts raw values into classes, such as marks of 20–30 and 30–40. Tabulation is the wider task of presenting any data in rows and columns.
