Texture
Topic: Remote Sensing, GIS and GNSS · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Introduction to Remote Sensing"
Meaning
Texture is how often the tone changes within a small part of an image. It ranges from smooth or fine to rough or coarse. It is created by groups of features too small to be seen one by one, such as single plants or houses. Texture helps separate surfaces that have a similar tone or colour.
Example
In images of the plains of western Uttar Pradesh, sugarcane fields look coarse because the tall, uneven crop gives a rough look. Rice fields look fine and smooth. In cities, dense housing areas show a fine texture.
Don't confuse with
- Tone: the shade or colour of a surface. Texture is how quickly that shade changes from spot to spot.
- Pattern: the regular arrangement of features large enough to be seen separately, such as orchard rows.
