Tista river
Also called: Teesta · Topic: Drainage System of India: Rivers, Basins and Patterns · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 3 "Drainage System"
Meaning
The Tista river (also spelt Teesta) rises in the high mountains of Sikkim. It flows south through north Bengal and enters Bangladesh. There it joins the Brahmaputra on its right bank, and below this point the Brahmaputra is called the Jamuna. The Tista is fed by snow and monsoon rain, so it is important for farming and hydropower in both countries. How to share its water in the dry season is a long-pending issue between India and Bangladesh.
Example
The Tista flows past Rangpo in Sikkim and Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. It then crosses into Bangladesh and meets the Brahmaputra, which has just entered Bangladesh near Dhubri (Assam).
Don't confuse with
- Jamuna (Bangladesh): this is the Brahmaputra's name in Bangladesh, below the point where the Tista joins. It is not the same as the Yamuna, the Ganga tributary in India.
- Ganga Water Treaty (1996): this treaty covers sharing of the Ganga at Farakka. India and Bangladesh have no such signed treaty for the Tista.
