Unclassed forest
Topic: Natural Vegetation and Forests of India · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Forest and Wildlife Resources"; Class 11, Ch 6 "Natural Hazards and Disasters: Causes, Consequences and Management"
Meaning
Unclassed forest is the third legal category of forest land in India, after reserved and protected forest. It covers all other forests and wastelands (unused land). The owner may be the government, private people or communities. Rules are lighter here than in reserved or protected forest, so the land is often used and managed by local people.
Example
Most forests in the northeastern states, and in parts of Gujarat, are unclassed. They are managed by local communities under their own traditional customs.
Don't confuse with
- Reserved forest: covers more than half of India's forest land and has the strongest protection. All activities are banned unless permitted.
- Protected forest: covers almost one-third of forest land. All activities are allowed unless banned. Together with reserved forest, it forms the permanent forest estate. Unclassed forest is not part of it.
