Unique Land Parcel Identification Number

Geography glossary

Also called: ULPIN, Bhu-Aadhaar · Topic: Land Use, Farming Systems and Cropping Seasons in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Unique Land Parcel Identification Number (ULPIN) is a 14-digit alphanumeric ID given to each piece of land. It is also called "Bhu-Aadhaar". The number is based on the geo-coordinates (exact map location) of the plot, so it points to one parcel on the ground and no other.

ULPIN has been rolled out since 2021 under the Digital India Land Records Modernization Programme (DILRMP). DILRMP digitises land records and maps across India. A single ID helps reduce land disputes and makes it easier to get loans. It also makes it easier to pool small farms through leasing or farmer producer organisations.

Example

A farmer's plot gets one 14-digit ULPIN tied to its corner coordinates. Banks, courts and revenue offices can all use that one number to identify the plot.

Don't confuse with

  • SVAMITVA (2020): this scheme maps rural homes using drones. ULPIN is an ID number for each land parcel.
  • Aadhaar: Aadhaar identifies a person. ULPIN identifies a piece of land.
