Urban forestry
Topic: Natural Vegetation and Forests of India · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 5 "Natural Vegetation"
Meaning
Urban forestry is the social forestry of towns and cities. It means raising and caring for trees on public and private land in and around urban areas. Examples are green belts, parks, avenues of trees along roads, and green belts around factories and shops. City trees give shade, cool the air, reduce dust and noise, and make towns better places to live. NCERT lists urban forestry as one of the three types of social forestry, along with rural and farm forestry.
Example
Chandigarh was planned with tree-lined avenues, green belts and large parks running through the city. This makes it a well-known example of urban forestry in India.
Don't confuse with
- Natural forest: a forest that has grown by itself and been left undisturbed. Urban forestry means trees that people plant and manage on purpose inside or around a town.
