Urban geography
Topic: Human Geography: Nature, Scope and Approaches · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Human Geography: Nature and Scope"
Meaning
Urban geography is a field of human geography. Its sister discipline is urban studies and planning. It studies where towns and cities grow, how they grow and what work they do. It also studies their internal structure, meaning how different areas inside a city are laid out. It also looks at urban problems such as slums, congestion and pollution.
Example
Mumbai began on a group of islands on India's west coast. The city spread northward along its suburban railway lines. Urban geography studies this growth and problems such as the Dharavi slum and crowded trains.
Don't confuse with
- Settlement geography: it covers all settlements, villages as well as towns. Urban geography focuses only on towns and cities.
