Viticulture

Geography glossary

Topic: Primary Activities: Gathering, Pastoralism, Agriculture and Mining · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 4 "Primary Activities"

Meaning

Viticulture means growing grapes. It is the speciality of Mediterranean agriculture, which is found in lands with dry summers and mild, wet winters. The best grapes are made into the world's finest wines, and poorer grapes are dried into raisins and currants. Grapes suit this climate because the hot, dry summer ripens and sweetens the fruit.

Example

The Mediterranean lands of southern Europe, such as southern France and Italy, are famous for vineyards and wine. In India, Nashik in Maharashtra is the best-known grape-growing area, producing table grapes, raisins and wine.

Don't confuse with

  • Horticulture: this is the wider growing of fruits, vegetables and flowers. Viticulture is grape growing only.
