White-collar and blue-collar workers
Topic: Secondary Activities: Manufacturing and Industrial Location · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 5 "Secondary Activities"; Class 12, Ch 6 "Tertiary and Quaternary Activities"
Meaning
White-collar workers are professionals and office staff who do mental work, such as designing, planning, researching and managing. Blue-collar workers do production or manual work on the factory floor or in the field. The names come from the clothes these workers traditionally wore. In high-tech industry, white-collar specialists greatly outnumber blue-collar workers. This is because research and design matter more than physical labour.
Example
In a software or electronics firm in Bengaluru, most staff are engineers, designers and researchers working at computers. These are white-collar workers. In an older steel plant at Jamshedpur in Jharkhand, a far larger share of the workforce operates furnaces and machines. These are blue-collar workers.
Don't confuse with
- Skilled and unskilled labour: many blue-collar workers are highly skilled, such as welders and machinists. The difference between white-collar and blue-collar work is mental work versus production work, not skill level.
