Buranji
Topic: Regional Resistance: Rajputs, Ahoms, Sikhs · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Buranjis are history books written at the court of the Ahom kings of Assam. They were first written in the Tai Ahom language and later in Assamese. They record court events, wars, treaties and how the kingdom was run. They are a rare tradition of written history in medieval India and a key source for Assam's past.
Example
Buranjis describe the Ahom wars against the Mughals, including the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. In that battle, Lachit Borphukan's 10,000 men defeated a Mughal force of 30,000 on the Brahmaputra near Guwahati.
Don't confuse with
- Persian court histories of the Mughals (such as the Akbarnama): these tell events from the Mughal side. Buranjis tell the Ahom side, in local languages.
