Meaning

The Rang Ghar is a two-storeyed royal pavilion at Rangpur, near Sivasagar in Assam. The Ahom king Pramatta Singha built it in brick around the middle of the 18th century. From it, the royal family watched games and sports such as buffalo fights during Rongali Bihu, the spring festival of Assam. It is often called one of the oldest surviving amphitheatres (open-air viewing places) in Asia. It shows the wealth and culture of the Ahom court.

Example

Pramatta Singha built the brick Rang Ghar at Rangpur, the Ahom capital of the time, in c. 1746. Its roof is shaped like an upturned royal Ahom boat.

Don't confuse with

  • Kareng Ghar / Talatal Ghar: these were Ahom palaces and living quarters at Garhgaon and Rangpur. The Rang Ghar was a pavilion for watching sports.
