Communist Party of China
Also called: CCP, Chinese Communist Party · Topic: Paths to Modernisation: Japan, China, Korea · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 6 "Displacing Indigenous Peoples"; Class 11, Ch 7 "Paths to Modernisation"
Meaning
The Communist Party of China (CCP) was founded in 1921, inspired by the Russian Revolution. The Comintern wanted it to build a revolution among city workers. Mao Zedong instead built its strength among the peasants. The party shared out land, set up its own government and army, and took up women's rights, such as ending arranged marriages. It defeated the Guomindang in 1949 and created the People's Republic of China. It still rules China, although since 1978 it has added market reforms while keeping firm party control.
Example
In 1934–35 the party made the Long March, about 6,000 miles, to escape a Guomindang blockade. At its new base at Yanan, it carried out land reform and fought warlords and foreign imperialism. This built the mass support that won the civil war.
Don't confuse with
- Guomindang: the rival Nationalist Party. Its base was mostly in the cities, it ignored the peasants, and it lost in 1949.
