Meaning

The People's Republic of China (PRC) is the state the Chinese Communist Party founded in 1949, after defeating the Guomindang. Its first phase was called New Democracy (1949–53). This was an alliance of all classes, and the state took control of the key parts of the economy. From 1953 the government began socialist transformation, which built mass organisations and promoted a "socialist man".

Example

The "socialist man" was expected to have five loves: love of the fatherland, the people, labour, science and public property. Later phases of the PRC included the Great Leap Forward (1958), the Cultural Revolution (1965/66) and Deng Xiaoping's reforms from 1978.

Don't confuse with

  • Republic of China: This was founded in 1911 under Sun Yat-sen. After Chiang Kai-shek fled there in 1949, it continued on Taiwan.
  • Dictatorship of the proletariat: New Democracy was expressly not this. It was an alliance of all classes.
