Cross-Strait relations

History glossary

Topic: Paths to Modernisation: Japan, China, Korea · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Paths to Modernisation"

Meaning

Cross-Strait relations means the ties between Taiwan and mainland China, across the Taiwan Strait. After 1949, Chiang Kai-shek's Guomindang ruled Taiwan as the Republic of China, while the Communists ruled the mainland. Joining the two again, called reunification, is still a sensitive issue. Most countries keep only trade missions in Taiwan, because Taiwan is considered part of China.

Example

Even without a political settlement, trade, investment and travel between Taiwan and the mainland have grown. China may accept a Taiwan that runs its own affairs, as long as Taiwan does not declare independence.

Don't confuse with

  • 38th parallel: This line divides Korea into north and south. The Taiwan Strait separates Taiwan from mainland China.
