Joseon dynasty
Also called: Chosun dynasty · Topic: Paths to Modernisation: Japan, China, Korea · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Paths to Modernisation"
Meaning
The Joseon dynasty (also spelt Chosun) ruled Korea from 1392 to 1910. In the late nineteenth century it faced trouble at home and pressure from China, Japan and the Western powers. Under this foreign pressure it tried some modernising reforms. The dynasty ended when Japan annexed Korea in 1910. To annex means to take over a country and make it part of your own.
Example
In 1910 Japan annexed Korea, ending more than 500 years of Joseon rule. Korea then stayed a Japanese colony until 1945. During that time Japan tried to force Koreans to adopt Japanese ways, which is called forced assimilation.
Don't confuse with
- Qing dynasty: the Qing were China's last dynasty (1644–1911) and fell to a revolution in 1911. Joseon was Korea's dynasty, and it ended when Japan annexed Korea in 1910.
