Daimabad bronzes
Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Daimabad bronzes are four bronze objects found at Daimabad in Maharashtra. They show a chariot with a rider pulled by two oxen, an elephant, a rhinoceros and a buffalo. They are usually linked to the Late Harappan phase, though their exact date is debated. They matter because they show bronze-casting skill far south of the main Harappan zone.
Example
In 1974, a hoard (a hidden store of objects) of these four bronzes was found at Daimabad, on the Pravara river in Maharashtra. The chariot group is the best known. A human figure stands on a chariot drawn by a pair of oxen.
Don't confuse with
- Dancing Girl: a single small bronze figure from Mohenjo-daro in Sindh. The Daimabad bronzes are a group of animal and chariot figures from Maharashtra.
