Khetri copper region
Also called: Khetri · Topic: Harappan (Sindhu-Sarasvati) Civilisation · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Bricks, Beads and Bones"
Meaning
Khetri is a copper-rich area in the Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan. The Harappans probably sent expeditions there to get copper. An expedition is a planned journey to collect something. Here lived the Ganeshwar-Jodhpura culture, a local community with its own non-Harappan pottery and an unusual wealth of copper objects. These people probably supplied copper to the Harappans.
Example
Occasional finds of Harappan steatite micro-beads in the Khetri area point to contact between Harappans and local people. This shows one way the Harappans got raw materials: by sending expeditions to distant sources rather than building their own towns there. In the same way, they probably sent expeditions to south India for gold.
Don't confuse with
- Oman (Magan) copper: copper brought from overseas across the sea. Khetri copper came from inside the subcontinent.
