Meaning
The Dharasana satyagraha was a peaceful march on the government salt works at Dharasana in Gujarat in May 1930. It happened during the Civil Disobedience Movement, soon after Gandhi was arrested. Satyagraha means non-violent resistance that tries to win by touching the conscience of the oppressor. Sarojini Naidu led the volunteers. They walked up to the salt works in rows and did not hit back. The police beat them down with steel-tipped lathis (heavy sticks).
Example
The American journalist Webb Miller saw the beatings at Dharasana in May 1930. He sent the story around the world. Many people abroad now saw British rule as brutal and the Indian protest as morally strong.
Don't confuse with
- Dandi March (12 March–6 April 1930): Gandhi's own walk to the sea to make salt. Dharasana came after it, as an attempt to take over a government salt works.
