Meaning

The Dilwara (Delvada) temples are a group of Jain temples at Mount Abu in Rajasthan. They were built under the Chaulukya kings of Gujarat and the rulers who came after them, in the 11th to 13th centuries. They are made of white marble and are famous for their extremely fine, lace-like carving, especially on the ceilings. They show the wealth and generosity of Jain merchants and ministers in western India.

Example

Vimal Shah, a minister of the Chaulukya king Bhima I, built the Vimal Vasahi temple in 1031, dedicated to the first tirthankara, Adinatha. In 1230 the brother-ministers Vastupala and Tejapala built the Luna Vasahi temple.

Don't confuse with

  • Ranakpur temple: another marble Jain temple in Rajasthan, but built much later, in the 15th century.
