Topic: The Mughal Empire: Babur to Aurangzeb · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

Faizi was a leading Persian poet at Akbar's court. Akbar made him the poet laureate (malik-ush-shuara, "king of poets"), the official chief poet of the court. He was the elder brother of Abul Fazl, Akbar's court historian. Faizi took part in Akbar's programme of translating Sanskrit works into Persian. This programme brought Indian learning to the Persian-reading Mughal elite.

Example

Faizi translated the Lilavati, a Sanskrit text on mathematics, into Persian for Akbar in the late 16th century. He is also usually counted among the "nine jewels" (navaratnas) of Akbar's court.

Don't confuse with

  • Abul Fazl: Faizi's younger brother. He was a historian, not a poet, and wrote the Akbarnama and the Ain-i-Akbari.
