G.D. Birla
Also called: Ghanshyam Das Birla · Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Nationalism in India"; Class 10, Ch 4 "The Age of Industrialisation"; Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
G.D. Birla (1894–1983) was a leading Indian industrialist. He openly supported the national movement and Gandhi, and he gave money to the Congress. Like many businessmen, he hoped that a free India would end the favours that British competitors enjoyed. His support shows that the Gandhian movement drew on wealthy business groups as well as peasants and workers.
Example
In 1927, Birla and Purshottamdas Thakurdas helped found FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry). He backed the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930 but cooled towards it after the second Round Table Conference failed.
