Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
Jamnalal Bajaj was a businessman from Wardha and one of Gandhi's closest followers. He spent his wealth on the Congress and on Gandhi's constructive work, which included khadi (hand-spun cloth) and the fight against untouchability. He also served as the Congress treasurer. Gandhi treated him almost as a son. He shows how some Indian businessmen supported the Gandhian movement both personally and with money.
Example
Bajaj gave land and support at Wardha. This helped make the area, including Gandhi's ashram at Sevagram near Wardha, a base for Gandhi and the Congress in the 1930s.
