Meaning
The Haripura session was the annual Congress meeting held at Haripura, in Gujarat, in February 1938. Subhas Chandra Bose was its president. The session is remembered for its push towards economic planning, meaning the state deciding how to develop industry and the economy. Later in 1938 this led Bose to set up the National Planning Committee, with Jawaharlal Nehru as its chairman.
Example
At the time, Congress ministries were in power in 8 of 11 provinces after the 1937 elections. Bose used his Haripura address to argue that a free India would need planned industrial growth. The National Planning Committee then began work on this under Nehru.
Don't confuse with
- Tripuri session (1939): Bose was re-elected at Tripuri, but his clash with Gandhi's supporters forced him to resign. Haripura was the earlier session, where he became president without a contest.
