Resignation of Congress ministries
Topic: The National Movement: Gandhian Era · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement"
Meaning
In October–November 1939 the Congress ministries in the provinces resigned. They were protesting because Viceroy Linlithgow had declared India at war in the Second World War without asking Indians. The Congress had offered to support the war if Britain promised independence, but Britain refused. The resignations ended about two years of Congress rule in the provinces.
Example
The Congress had governed 8 of 11 provinces since the 1937 elections, and all these ministries left office. The Muslim League celebrated their exit as a "Day of Deliverance" (22 December 1939). Individual satyagrahas followed in 1940–41.
