Topic: Prehistory: Human Origins and Stone Age Cultures · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Jogimara is a small cave in the Ramgarh hills of Surguja district, Chhattisgarh. It has early painted figures, such as people and animals, on its ceiling. It also has a short inscription in the Brahmi script. It belongs to historic times, probably the last centuries BCE, and not to prehistory. It is often counted among the oldest painted caves of the historic period in India.
Example
The Brahmi inscription at Jogimara names a woman, Sutanuka, and a man, Devadinna. Next to it is the Sitabenga cave, which some scholars see as an early theatre.
Don't confuse with
- Bhimbetka: Bhimbetka (Madhya Pradesh) has prehistoric rock paintings, many from the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) or earlier. Jogimara's paintings come from historic times, when writing was already in use.
